Stranraer, at the end of the day, had equalled their best ever points tally in the second division, but if they are to beat that total and gain promotion they will have to perform much better in the run-in to the season's end.

The first half proved to be 45 minutes of tentative mediocrity relieved only by very occasional flashes of half-decent football mostly from the visitors, who managed in the early stages to hit the Stranraer woodwork when Paul Shields' close-range shot came off the keeper's left-hand post.

But for all that Forfar never looked like scoring nor indeed did Stranraer, who had slightly more possession but never forced even a half- decent save from visiting keeper Michael Brown.

Fans agreed at the break that the next period was bound to be an improvement, but here again the sides seemed determined to prove them wrong. Passes went astray, moves broke down, long lameless balls were booted upfield and the two keepers might well have taken the day off.

With the appearance of Paul Tosh on the hour for Forfar, there was undoubtedly more excitement, but while he knew what he wanted to do he found carrying it out against a stuffy home defence was a different matter.

He had one real chance which might have earned all the points for his side, but to his disgust he completely miskicked allowing home keeper Michael McGovern his only real save. After that the match ground its weary way to a goal-less draw with neither side deserving more.
