Stranraer 2 Brechin City 0

Brechin, following this visit to Stranraer, found themselves further behind their relegation rivals Queen of the South in their battle to avoid the drop to the second division.

Stranraer started strongly, pushing City back from the kick-off and opened the scoring after six minutes. Stephen Swift started and finished the move, using Leigh Hinds to take a wall pass and then drilling his shot into the City goal.

And with more pressure Stranraer doubled their lead four minutes later with a penalty. Stranraer's top scorer Michael Moore was brought down in the box by Scott Walker, and David Hamilton converted the spot-kick.

Brechin, although two down, were by no means out, and at half-time could justifiably have felt they should have been on the score-sheet. Home keeper Barry-John Corr had a couple of smart saves, one from Gerry Britton and the other from a David White header.

The woodwork, too, had helped Stranraer before and after the break, the latter when keeper Corr watched a White header go past and got a fright when it spun against the post and almost went in.

Corr was the busier keeper early in the second half with Brechin taking the initiative. But the visitors' greater share of the ball was not converted into goals, and when Stranraer did come forward they gave City keeper Craig Nelson more to do..

The home side had a good grip of the game in the final stretch and held on easily until the end.
